According to a WiredPRNews.com story the government is calling on vets to fill positions in trucking. The average American, who is not in trucking or transportation, has no idea the impact that a weak transportation sector has on this economy. 

Obviously you cannot grow if there is no one to ship packages or pick them up. Construction materials, food, medical supplies, military equipment either does not get delivered OR is mega expensive to deliver since the cost to have a driver is outrageous.

Toll Running Not Recommended For Heavy Haul or Specialized Hauling Drivers

Image via Wikipedia        As Americans I truly believe we have a natural animosity to tolls, fees, and taxes. Our independent rebellious nature makes us rebel against any organized attempt to grab small amounts of lose change when we drive on a road, buy food, or just live in a particular area. The thought of paying shipping costs turns our blood cold. Look at all the free shipping offers. Many people will pay more for a product to get FREE shipping. It must go back to Colonial times. I picture the Boston tea party as the American people’s first war against tolls when angry locals dumped the very tea they wanted to drink into the sea to avoid paying taxes on it. The amount of the tea tax was unimportant. The penalty of getting hung for tossing tea into the harbor was worth the cost. The principle of fighting against oppressive fees motivated us to get creative in our attempt to fight the toll system. 

          Well, I think that spirit of rebellion is alive and well today. Our first story is how some creative Americans are fighting back against tolls using ILLEGAL DANGEROUS and ridiculous methods. Forget the fact that they will spend 100X the money in legal fees if they get caught trying to cheat the toll system. Forget the physical risk incurred to avoid paying that dollar. Regardless, I have an amusing story about a recent toll runner and some creative methods to avoid paying tolls. Read on and don’t try this at home…ever.

A Virginia truck driver has been caught running the New York / New Jersey toll system using inventive Hollywood inspired methods to hide the license plate. The driver used a cable to retract the front license plate when going through the toll. The driver folded the corners of the rear license plate as well. Unfortunately it did not work and I don’t know how many CSA points you get for defrauding the transit system but I would imagine a lot. The CSA points are pale in comparison to the fact the driver is getting booked with criminal charges. I doubt the money saved on the toll will cover the amount of legal costs and penalties.

The story piqued my interest as to what other methods have been tried to elude tolls. Before I begin I must give this disclaimer:

PLEASE, PLEASE DON’T TRY THIS!

I scoured the internet to see just how far people are going to avoid tolls.I know that most of these methods would be impractical in the realm of specialized hauling or heavy hauls, but it is pretty entertaining to read. Here is a list of methods I discovered

• Take alternate routes
• Putting a reduced amount in the toll change pouch
• Taping an I.O.U. to the toll pouch (You are not a bank executive asking for a government bailout, you will go to jail for that)
• Taping two pictures of the rapper 50 cent in the toll pouch to pay the dollar toll (2 x .50= $1.00)
• Putting in foreign money or Chuck E. Cheese tokens( if you have kids you will need these)
• Putting oranges into the toll pouch
• Fake a hand motion of throwing change in without doing it (I saw someone do this in Virginia Beach when they still had tolls )
• Driving off road onto a walkway
• Driving between barricades…with no road
• Tape over the license plate
• Use a cd to cover the license plate
• Sending the car airborne over a barricade (this technique is also known as the ‘General Lee’ from Dukes of Hazard fame)

On the surface I know what you are thinking....very mundane common object to go on a heavy haul BUT considering where we stand economically, this is a good sign. Moving construction equipment means that someone is building something somewhere...which means growth...so I will stay optimistic for 2012:)

For the first time since May, the national average price of a gallon of diesel has topped the four-dollar mark.

Diesel is up 2.3 cents from last weeks price survey to $4.011 per gallon the Department of Energy reported on Monday. The lowest regional average price was report in the Gulf Coast states at $3.903, while California posted the highest prices in the country, averaging $4.271 statewide.

Diesel is now nearly 84 cents a gallon higher that is was a year ago.

Gasoline prices, on the other hand, dipped 6.8 cents a gallon for a nationwide average of $3.368 per gallon, the biggest weekly drop posted over the past seven weeks.

Even as price march upward, U.S. fuel demand in October rose to the highest level for the month in three years, led by gains in diesel consumption, the American Petroleum Institute said.

Total deliveries of petroleum products increased 2.5% to 19.4 million barrels a day last month from a year earlier, the API said Monday in a report. Year-to-date consumption has averaged 19.2 million barrels a day, up 0.1 percent from the same period in 2010.

"Our economy is growing modestly and the overall demand numbers support that," John Felmy, chief economist with the Washington-based API, said in the report.

Consumption of distillate fuels, a category that includes diesel and heating oil, rose 12% to 4.24 million barrels a day in October, the highest level for the month since 2006.

Good Recycling Starts with Good Sorting

Once again I head out to see the current "haul of the day" One of the great things about specialized hauling is you dont know what you are going to get. Usually you know it will be one thing:

Other than that its a crap shoot. After a few questions I learn this is a giant sorting bin. A huge part of recycling is sorting different materials into their proper groups. This makes sorting bins, like the one above, vital. On top of that we are not just hauling this, we are fixing it. Even though it is not a vehicle it is mechanically serviceable by a truck mechanic.

                          Todays Specialized Hauling project: RecyclingRegardless of how mundane this looks, this is really an important piece of specialized equipment. We cant save the Earth if we dont recycle and we can't recycle if we have no way to sort different materials AND we cant do that without sorting bins like the one above.

So the next time you see a long flatbed go by, carrying something unkown, it could be the "future" staring back at you in the form of a dirty old trash bin....or something like that.

Specialized Hauling Driver securing the load

Many mornings I come outside and the specialized hauling fleets will be loading with things that look they are part of other bigger things or are used to make other bigger things.Today was very mundane. A simple transport of an xl trailer used for specialized hauling to another location to haul bigger things.For a moment I was disappointed, BUT I did

notice one of our dedicated drivers working with the lever binders to make sure the load was secure.

This is an often overlooked part of the process. Someone has to make sure these loads are secure, or the consequences could be disastrous. I have never heard of one of these loads coming loose, which is a good reflection on our drivers who skillfully tie these down each day.

What the ? is that thing you are hauling

Yes, we continue to haul specialized equipment as the economy recovers. I get up, grab the camera and head out to photograph the next "interesting" specialized hauling project we have going. This is what I saw being loaded to the truck:

It looks industrial, its got pipes and valves and after five minutes I still dont know what it is. So I use the power of deductive reasoning and go ask the service manager. Turns out this is an industrial vaccum hooked that hooks to the back of a building. I guess they have to come from somewhere...well, another successful haul.
