Back to Work After Christmas: Specialized Hauling of Construction Equipment for East Coast Specialized Hauling:

On the surface I know what you are thinking....very mundane common object to go on a heavy haul BUT considering where we stand economically, this is a good sign. Moving construction equipment means that someone is building something somewhere...which means growth...so I will stay optimistic for 2012:)

Imagine A Specialized Hauler Moving This

There is no official contest for largest specialized hauling cargo. Nevertheless I look for things that would be challenging for no other reason than I do not know who had to move them to where they are (other than driving them versus having them hauled to reduce mileage). We have moved a lot of large construction equipment for different customers, but nothing like this.

Take a look at this and use your imagination:

Maverick Orders 350 New Freightliner Cascadias, Adds MTIS to Trailers - Truckinginfo.com

Maverick Orders 350 New Freightliner Cascadias, Adds MTIS to Trailers

Maverick Transportation will begin taking delivery of 350 new MY 2012 and 2013 trucks in the first quarter of 2012, and spec'ing the Meritor Tire Inflation System by PSI on all new trailers purchased in 2012.

The new Cascadias will be equipped with electronic onboard recorders, auxiliary power units, and the latest in safety technology, including collision avoidance, and roll stability control. The trucks will also contain the latest Daimler engine technology and Eaton electronic shift transmissions.

Among the new trucks, 190 units will be replacements as Maverick strives to reduce maintenance costs and lower the average age of the fleet. The remaining 160 units will represent growth as the company continues to expand its service offering and provide additional capacity to its customer base.

Maverick took delivery of 500 new trucks throughout 2011.

"Maverick's latest truck order means the vast majority of our fleet will be 2010 year models or newer," said Vice President of Maintenance Mike Jeffress. "We want our professional drivers and customers alike to enjoy the best equipment in the transportation industry."

Once again the tire inflation systems are being added to new trucks. I cannot think of a better application than on the specialized hauling loads of gigantic bulk cargo. The idea that possible tire accidents, fuel waste and breakdowns are prevented could really add something to the heavy haul industry...

More Signs Of Recovery...

Need specialized hauling: CLICK HERE
Two huge determining factors of economic health are transportation and construction. We all know transportation is moving right along but I am happy to say that construction is showing signs of life as well. In an article from the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association, construction employment has reached a 15 month high. While this is not great it is a real sign of life for the general economy and the specialized hauling industry.

We are not back to pre recession levels yet, but this is a definite BIG STEP in the positive direction. If we can keep the economic momentum this could translate into more growth and less distance to full recovery. As a specialized hauler, construction growth is huge as companies need to move materials and equipment to new job sites.

Diesel Climbs North of $4 as Oil Slips on Recurring Economic Worries - Truckinginfo.com

Higher Diesel Prices Are Upon Us...It Is Inevitable That The Price of Heavy Haul or Specialized Hauling Loads Will Go Up....Hopefully Slowly

From TruckingInfo.com
November 2011

For the first time since May, the national average price of a gallon of diesel has topped the four-dollar mark.

Diesel is up 2.3 cents from last weeks price survey to $4.011 per gallon the Department of Energy reported on Monday. The lowest regional average price was report in the Gulf Coast states at $3.903, while California posted the highest prices in the country, averaging $4.271 statewide.

Diesel is now nearly 84 cents a gallon higher that is was a year ago.

Gasoline prices, on the other hand, dipped 6.8 cents a gallon for a nationwide average of $3.368 per gallon, the biggest weekly drop posted over the past seven weeks.

Even as price march upward, U.S. fuel demand in October rose to the highest level for the month in three years, led by gains in diesel consumption, the American Petroleum Institute said.

Total deliveries of petroleum products increased 2.5% to 19.4 million barrels a day last month from a year earlier, the API said Monday in a report. Year-to-date consumption has averaged 19.2 million barrels a day, up 0.1 percent from the same period in 2010.

"Our economy is growing modestly and the overall demand numbers support that," John Felmy, chief economist with the Washington-based API, said in the report.

Consumption of distillate fuels, a category that includes diesel and heating oil, rose 12% to 4.24 million barrels a day in October, the highest level for the month since 2006.

Even The Largest Specialized Hauling Cargo Is Fair Game To Con Artists!

Now More Than Ever You Need To Know Who Your Specialized Hauler Is....

As you have probably read, cargo theft is on the rise. Not just traditional hijacking but sophisticated schemes that read like something out of a Hollywood heist movie. Con Artists are using fake storefronts, convincing internet sites, substantial storage warehouses, and unparalleled daring in choosing bigger and bigger targets.

I recently read of a group of con artists stealing multiple tractor trailer loads of tomatoes from farmers in the summer. Think about what would have to happen to pull something like that off:

• Crooks would have to organize a fake storefront online

• Crooks would have to organize drivers, warehouse personnel, bookkeepers, and ‘face’ men willing to run the scheme without mistake

• Crooks would be operating under a short window to liquidate a very perishable item. Tomatoes would have to be kept garden fresh or they would lost their resale value within hours

• Crooks would have to be like Houdini, transporting loads this large and obvious without arousing suspicion

• Crooks would have to worry about someone seeing something as bucket load after bucket load of tomatoes are moved somewhere and unloaded. Think of how many big schemes get foiled over the smallest detail

Where am I going with this? Even big loads, like specialized hauling of giant pieces of equipment and material, is no longer beyond the realm of these gangs. Some of the shipping companies you are dealing with may be nothing more than smooth fronts to steal you blind.

So what can we do? Deal with a well know reputable firm. Come see their facility and verify that they are real. East Coast Truck and Trailer has a real facility, real people, and a real reputation. We deliver specialized hauling loads and can prove that we are reputable. If you require the movement of large cargo, to and from the Port of Virginia, please call or visit East Coast Specialized Hauling. Our website is eastcoastspecializedhauling.com

Example variable speed limit sign in the Unite...Image via WikipediaFrom Truckinginfo.com
November 2011

The Texas Department of Transportation has begun work to remove the 65-mile per hour nighttime speed limit and all truck speed limit signs on Lubbock District roadways.

House Bill 1353, which took effect on September 1, eliminated the 65-mile per hour nighttime speed limit and all truck speed limits on Texas roadways.

"This week, contractors began removing 950 nighttime and 1050 truck and truck nighttime speed signs in the Lubbock District's 17 county area," said Doug Eichorst, P.E., Lubbock District Engineer. "This should be a relatively fast moving operation and we anticipate that it will take approximately four weeks to remove all the signs in our district."

Specialized Hauling Of An Oversized Component

Not every specialized hauling project is the transportation of a complete object. Many times a large piece of something even bigger is being transported by East Coast Specialized Hauling. When I enter the lot many times, the process of discovery starts. Take a look at this object:

At first I thought it was  a boat but upon closer look, and help from the
driver, I realized it was piece of a crane....a really big crane.

Trucking, Specialized Hauling and Social Media

Opinion: Why Trucking Should Adopt Social Media

Image representing Facebook as depicted in Cru...Image via CrunchBaseBy Dick Hyatt

June 2011

Social media are transforming the way America does business, and there’s no reason that shouldn’t include trucking. When it comes to traditional trucking products such as vehicles, systems and components, the development life cycle can be fairly long. The time span required from initial concept through design, research and development and testing before production can begin can be measured in years. Information-management technology, on the other hand, often has a much shorter development life.

US truck - California 2007Image via WikipediaWhat that means for those of us who supply the advanced technologies used to manage trucking companies today is that our objective has to be communicating more effectively with our customers and partners.
Traditionally, we have employed such practices as focus groups to accomplish this task, and while they yielded results, these groups were expensive, time-consuming and static.

Fixed in time, they simply could not address technology issues and customer and partner challenges in an effective and beneficial time frame.

But today, many trucking companies and industry suppliers of all types of technologies are successfully using social media communication channels such as blogging, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube to meet almost immediately the challenges and needs of customers and partners.

Preventing truck and carhauling accidents

6/13/2011 Trucking Groups Call on NHTSA to Examine Truck Crashworthiness Standards

American Trucking Associations and the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association together called on the federal government to begin researching standards for crashworthiness for heavy trucks.

"NHTSA has continuously developed crashworthiness standards for automobiles and light trucks, but to date has generally not applied crashworthiness standards to commercial trucks," the two groups wrote in a June 6 letter to David Strickland, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "We believe there may be opportunities to enhance the survivability of professional truck drivers if appropriate, research-based, uniform standards are developed."

Fuel price challenges for carhaulers and truckers...

More money to fill your carhauler…more money to fill your rig.

I am waiting and watching as fuel continues upward against the backdrop of 9.1% inflation. The price of goods is increasing everyday and no one is viewing the fuel situation for what it really is, a crisis and an opportunity. The crisis is that the price of fuel will get so expensive that the average American will struggle to purchase even the most basic of commodities from the grocery store. The opportunity is that it will galvanize the entire American public to pursue a mission of alternate energy programs everywhere to get us out of this boom-bust oil nightmare forever

NAFTA: Mexican truckers to drive cargo into US interior

By Chris Roberts / El Paso Times, Texas
Sunday, May 29, 2011

As the Obama administration prepares to honor a 17-year-old treaty with Mexico allowing that country’s long-haul trucks into the U.S. heartland, emotions are again at fever pitch as businesses on both sides of the border predict job losses and industry upheaval.

The North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, included a provision that the United States and Mexico would allow each other’s trucks to haul cargo across the border for delivery anywhere inside the other country.

To comply with NAFTA, the Obama administration in April proposed a three-year pilot program with requirements for Mexican truckers that include a preliminary safety audit, purchase of U.S. insurance, English proficiency for drivers, truck inspections for every border crossing for at least the first three months, an 18-month probation period and a three-month renewal period for safety inspections after permanent authority is granted.

"Participating Mexican carriers and drivers would be required to comply with all applicable U.S. laws and regulations, including those concerned with motor carrier safety, customs, immigration, vehicle registration and taxation, and fuel taxation," according to the program’s legal description.

When the pilot program concludes, the Mexican haulers would receive the same authority granted U.S.-based truckers. Public comment on the proposed program ended last week, and the final version is expected later this year.

But the devil has been in the details in the United States as objections have arisen over safety, fair competition, reciprocity and other issues. Some Mexican carriers are concerned that opening the borders will encourage U.S. haulers to locate in Mexico and dominate their industry.

"I wasn’t in Congress when they voted for NAFTA," said U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas. "But I think we signed the treaty and we should follow the treaty and respect its conditions."

Good Recycling Starts with Good Sorting

Once again I head out to see the current "haul of the day" One of the great things about specialized hauling is you dont know what you are going to get. Usually you know it will be one thing:

Something very large

Other than that its a crap shoot. After a few questions I learn this is a giant sorting bin. A huge part of recycling is sorting different materials into their proper groups. This makes sorting bins, like the one above, vital. On top of that we are not just hauling this, we are fixing it. Even though it is not a vehicle it is mechanically serviceable by a truck mechanic.

International Recycle Symbol                          Todays Specialized Hauling project: RecyclingRegardless of how mundane this looks, this is really an important piece of specialized equipment. We cant save the Earth if we dont recycle and we can't recycle if we have no way to sort different materials AND we cant do that without sorting bins like the one above.

So the next time you see a long flatbed go by, carrying something unkown, it could be the "future" staring back at you in the form of a dirty old trash bin....or something like that.
